✈️ How UK Families Can Beat Jet Lag at Walt Disney World

Travelling from the UK to Walt Disney World is exciting — but jet lag with kids can definitely hit hard during those first few days in Florida

The good news? Early waking can actually become one of your biggest advantages if you plan your park days properly.

Most UK families find themselves awake at 4am–6am during the first part of their holiday, so instead of fighting it, use those extra early mornings to get ahead of the crowds, enjoy lower wait times, and fit more into your Disney days

Here are our favourite ways to beat jet lag at Disney World as a UK family.

🦁 Start with Animal Kingdom on Your First Day

One of the best parks for your arrival day is Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Animal Kingdom usually opens earlier than the other Disney parks — often at 8am while the others open around 9am. If your body clock already has you awake before sunrise, this works perfectly.

✨ If you’re staying at a Disney Resort hotel, Early Entry begins 30 minutes before official opening, meaning you can actually be on a ride by 7:30am at Animal Kingdom.

For UK families already awake early thanks to jet lag, this is one of the best ways to maximise your first few days.

The early mornings at Animal Kingdom are also:

  • 🌤️ Cooler

  • 👣 Less crowded

  • 🦒 Better for seeing animals active

  • 👶 Easier with younger children

You can get loads done before lunchtime and avoid that exhausted afternoon slump.

⏰ Use Early Entry to Your Advantage

If you’re staying at a Disney Resort hotel, you’ll get access to Early Entry, allowing you into the parks 30 minutes before official opening time.

This makes a huge difference for UK guests who are naturally awake early anyway.

For example:

  • 🎡 Park opening: 9am

  • 🚪 Early Entry: 8:30am

  • 🕗 Ideal arrival time: around 7:30–8am

Getting there early means you’ll already be through security and near the front of the crowds when Disney begins letting guests into the park.

This is one of the best ways to avoid huge queues during your first few jet-lagged mornings.

🎢 Head Straight to Your Family’s Must-Do Rides

If your children have rides they are desperate to do, make those your first stop while crowds are still low.

The biggest attractions at Disney can build massive queues incredibly quickly — even before official opening time

This is especially important for:

  • 🆕 New rides

  • 🎢 Popular rollercoasters

  • ⚡ Attractions without Lightning Lane

  • 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family rides with consistently high wait times

✨ On our most recent trip to Universal Islands of Adventure, we arrived an hour before regular opening using Early Entry as on-site guests, and the queue for Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure was already showing 180 minutes.

That’s why researching queue times before your trip is so important

Look into:

  • ⏳ Which rides gather queues fastest

  • 📊 Average wait times

  • 🏃 Rope drop strategies

  • 🆕 Recently opened attractions

  • 🌅 Which rides are best done first thing in the morning

A little planning can honestly save hours of standing in queues.

👶 Don’t Underestimate the Power of a Pram

Even if your child doesn’t normally use a pram much at home, a pram can be an absolute lifesaver during those first jet-lagged days.

When you’re trying to move quickly between attractions before the parks fully open to regular guests, having a pram makes a huge difference.

It helps you:

  • 🏃 Move faster across the parks

  • 🎢 Reach popular rides quicker

  • 😩 Avoid tired little legs slowing you down

  • 💤 Keep younger children rested for longer days

Those early mornings are often your best chance to ride several major attractions with minimal waits, so being able to “zoom” across the park efficiently really helps.

🍳 Book Early Breakfast Reservations Inside the Parks

One of the best Disney hacks for UK visitors is booking breakfast reservations before the parks officially open.

For example, if Magic Kingdom Park opens at 9am, breakfast reservations may begin from 8am, for example at Cinderella’s Royal Table

Arriving around 7:45am allows you to:

  • 📸 Enter the park while it’s quiet

  • 🏰 Take crowd-free castle photos

  • ☕ Enjoy breakfast before ride time starts

  • 🎟️ Save valuable park time later in the day

Character breakfasts are especially useful because they can take quite a while, so getting them done early prevents them from taking over the middle of your park day.

🍍 Use the Early Days for Resort Dining

The first few days of your trip are also ideal for dining at Disney resorts.

Travelling between resorts can sometimes take longer than expected, so using those naturally early mornings makes things feel far more relaxed.

A great example is ’Ohana, which opens for breakfast from around 7:30am

You can enjoy breakfast at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort and still comfortably make it to a park for opening time afterwards.

Maybe you don’t need characters at your breakfast?

🌅 Don’t Fight the Jet Lag — Use It

Jet lag at Disney World can actually work in your favour if you plan around it properly.

The first few mornings are often the best time to:

  • 🎢 Ride major attractions

  • ⏳ Avoid long queues

  • 📸 Take better photos

  • 🌤️ Enjoy cooler weather

  • 🚶 Experience quieter parks

Then, when the afternoon tiredness hits, you can head back to your resort for:

  • 🏊 A swim

  • 😴 A nap

  • 🍹 Relaxed resort time

  • 🍽️ An early dinner

Trying to push through all day usually ends in overtired children and stressed parents, so embrace those early starts while they last
