Disney Dining Plan Character Dining UK Guide: Costs, Credits & Value Explained

If you’re planning a Walt Disney World trip from the UK, there’s one big question that comes up again and again:

Is the Disney table service Dining Plan actually worth it?

And for most families, the real deciding factor is this:

Character dining.

Because let’s be honest—meeting Mickey, princesses, and your kids’ favourite characters while you eat is one of the most magical (and expensive) parts of a Disney trip.

✨ Character Dining Included on the Dining Plan

🍽️ What Counts as Character Dining on the Dining Plan?

Character dining meals are usually classed as Table Service credits on the Disney Dining Plan.

Most are:

  • 1 Table Service credit

  • Buffet, family-style, or prix fixe meals

  • Includes character interactions at your table

Some premium experiences (like dining inside the castle) may cost 2 credits, which is important when working out value.

This is shown of the image above. Cinderellas royal table, Artist point and Akershus (except breakfast which is one credit) are all two credit meals meaning you will use two of your dining credits for those meals.

✨ Understanding Dining Styles (Prix Fixe vs Family-Style vs Buffet)

When booking character dining, you’ll come across three main dining styles—and this can really affect both your experience and the value you get from the dining plan.

🥂 Prix Fixe (Set Menu)

A prix fixe meal means you pay a fixed price for a full meal.

Typically includes:

  • Starter

  • Main

  • Dessert

  • Drink (Adults can choose an alcoholic drink. When we were there it was any drink up to the value of $18)

Everyone at the table usually orders from the same set menu.

What this means for you:

  • ✔ Higher quality, restaurant-style meals

  • ✔ Often the best value for dining plan credits

  • ✖ Less flexibility

🍗 Family-Style (All-You-Care-To-Eat at the Table)

Large platters are brought to your table and you can request more of anything.

What this means for you:

  • ✔ Great for families and picky eaters

  • ✔ Good portion sizes (these are usually enormous!) and solid value

  • ✔ No need to queue like a buffet

  • ✖ Less variety than a buffet

🍴 Buffet

You serve yourself and can go up as many times as you like.

What this means for you:

  • ✔ Huge variety

  • ✔ Easy with kids

  • ✔ Quick and flexible

  • ✖ Can feel busy

  • ✖ Value depends on how much you eat

👶🏽 What About Children Under 3?

One important detail that can make a big difference to your overall value:

Children under 3 don’t need a dining plan and aren’t automatically given their own meal.

At most restaurants, they can:

  • Share from an adult’s plate

  • Eat for free at buffets and family-style meals

  • Will get their own drink

Why This Matters

If you’re travelling with a toddler:

  • You’re not paying for a dining plan for them

  • But they can still eat at many meals

This can significantly improve value, especially at:

  • Buffets

  • Family-style meals

  • Character dining

One Thing to Know

At prix fixe meals, they typically won’t receive their own plated meal unless you purchase one separately.

✨ Is Character Dining Good Value on the Dining Plan?

Character dining is one of the most expensive meal types at Disney World, often costing:

  • £36 - £65 per adult

So when you use a Table Service credit here, you’re often getting maximum value per credit.

✨ When the Dining Plan IS worth It

The dining plan can be worth it if:

✔ You’re booking multiple character meals

✔ You prioritise experiences over flexibility

✔ You want to pre-pay your trip (great for UK families)

✔ You’re choosing higher-value meals

Restaurants like:

  • Tusker House Restaurant

  • Chef Mickey’s

  • Akershus Royal Banquet Hall

…are often where you get the most value from your credits.

✨ When It’s NOT Worth It

✖ You’re only doing 1 character meal

✖ You have light eaters

✖ You want flexibility

✖ You use credits on cheaper meals

✨ The Biggest Mistake Families Make

Not planning how to use their credits properly.

If you’re not prioritising:

  • Character dining

  • Higher-priced meals

…you’re unlikely to get full value.

⭐ Final Verdict: Worth It or Not?

✨ YES, it can be worth it if:

  • You’re doing multiple character experiences or other expensive sit down meals

  • You plan your meals in advance

  • You want a stress-free, prepaid holiday

✨ NO, it’s not worth it if:

  • You’re only doing a few character meals or high cost dining

  • You want flexibility

  • You’re focused purely on saving money

✨ Final Tip for UK Families

If character dining is a must-do, the dining plan can feel like great value—even if the numbers don’t perfectly add up.

But if it’s not a priority?

You’re usually better off paying out of pocket.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (Based on Real Experience)

✨ Did you feel like the Disney table service Dining Plan was worth it for character dining?

Yes — 100% it felt worth it, especially for families. The kids absolutely loved the character meals, and overall it felt like great value. When you’re doing multiple character dining experiences, the convenience and experience make a big difference to the trip.

✨ Which character dining restaurants did you do?

We did:

  • Chef Mickey’s (breakfast)

  • Tusker House Restaurant (lunch)

  • Garden Grill Restaurant (lunch)

✨ Which character dining was your favourite?

Tusker House Restaurant was the standout for us because it was new to us and felt really special. The safari outfits added something different, and the overall experience felt a bit more unique compared to the more traditional character meals.

✨ Would you do the same restaurants again?

We probably wouldn’t do exactly the same ones again, purely because there are so many to try. That said, it’s always hard to say no to Chef Mickey’s — it’s a classic and one we keep going back to.

✨ Did your children enjoy the food and experience?

Yes — our children are big eaters, and they really enjoyed the buffets. We personally preferred buffets over family-style meals because there is usually more choice and it tends to be more kid-friendly.

✨ How did dining work with a child under 3?

We travelled with a 12-month-old and he shared food from our plates or from the buffet. This worked really well for us. In general, we found buffets and family-style meals easiest with a baby or toddler.

✨ Did the dining plan make planning easier?

Yes — it actually made things easier. Having meals booked in advance gave us structure and helped shape our days. We just worked around the children’s meal times and factored in jet lag during the first few days.

✨ Was it difficult to get character dining reservations?

We didn’t find it too difficult because we booked exactly at the 60-day mark when dining reservations opened. Planning early is definitely key if you want popular character meals.

✨ Did you try any non-character restaurants too?

Yes — and we actually really enjoyed mixing it up. Restaurants like:

  • Coral Reef Restaurant

  • Roundup Rodeo BBQ

were great for a break from character dining. It’s nice to have themed dining without characters, especially as a break from quick service meals, which can get repetitive in some parks.

✨ Anything you wish you knew before booking?

We had used the dining plan before, so we were fairly familiar with it. One thing worth remembering is that gratuity is not included, so you still need to factor that into your budget.

Also, the inclusion of alcoholic drinks (for adults) was a nice bonus that adds extra value to the plan.

Make sure you are aware of the free dining black out dates!
