✈️ How to Spend Your First Morning at Walt Disney World (When Jet Lag Has You Wide Awake!)

If you’re travelling from the UK, there’s a very good chance your first morning at Walt Disney World won’t involve a lie-in. In fact, you might find yourself wide awake at 4 or 5am thanks to jet lag!

On our first trip, I remember looking at the clock thinking “it’s still the middle of the night” while everyone else was already buzzing with excitement. Rather than lying there trying (and failing) to sleep, this is the perfect moment to get ahead of the day. My favourite recommendation for your very first Disney morning is to head straight to Animal Kingdom. 🦁🌿

🌅 Why Animal Kingdom?

Animal Kingdom is usually the first Disney park to open, often welcoming guests from around 7:30am. That means you can make the most of those early hours before the crowds arrive.

Disney buses generally start running between 6:30am and 6:45am, so getting there nice and early is easy if you’re staying at a Disney hotel.

On our first morning, we were actually stood waiting for the bus before sunrise, and it already felt like we were getting “extra Disney time” compared to everyone else still getting ready for the day. Those first couple of hours really are some of the quietest you’ll experience all holiday. ✨

🛬 Here we focus on how to deal with jet lag overall when you land in Orlando

🍳 Start the Day with Breakfast

If you’ve been awake since the early hours, you’ll probably be ready for breakfast long before the parks open!

An early breakfast at Tusker House Restaurant is a brilliant way to begin your holiday. It’s a fun character dining experience and sets you up nicely for the morning ahead. 🐘

We found that having a proper sit-down breakfast on that first morning really helped us slow down for a moment before the rush of rides and queues started.

If you’d rather grab something quickly, it’s worth knowing that not all of Animal Kingdom’s quick-service restaurants serve breakfast. In fact, quite a few don’t open until later in the morning, so check what’s available before you arrive.

🚫 Don’t Head Straight to Kilimanjaro Safaris

This is one of the biggest mistakes first-time visitors make.

Although the park opens early, Kilimanjaro Safaris doesn’t usually open with Early Entry. It normally starts operating at around 8:00am, so don’t spend your first half hour waiting there.

We made this mistake once and ended up standing in the wrong place while everyone else was already disappearing into Pandora!

🦋 Make a Beeline for Pandora

Head straight to Pandora – The World of Avatar.

Your first stop should be Avatar Flight of Passage. It’s one of the most popular attractions in all of Walt Disney World, and the queue grows quickly.

On one of our mornings, we went straight there and walked through almost empty pathways — it genuinely felt like we had the park to ourselves for a short time, which is something you just don’t get later in the day.

Once you’ve experienced Flight of Passage, stay in Pandora and enjoy Na’vi River Journey while you’re there. Its queue also builds as the morning goes on, so it’s worth ticking both attractions off early.

🎢 What Next?

If your family enjoys thrill rides, make your way over to Expedition Everest, where queues are often still fairly short.

If you’d rather take things a little slower, enjoy a wander around the park and soak up the incredible atmosphere. 🐾

Most of Animal Kingdom’s stage shows don’t begin until around 10:00am, so don’t plan your morning around them.

🐘 Then Head to the Safari

Once Kilimanjaro Safaris opens, it’s well worth making that your next attraction.

We’ve had some of our best safari experiences first thing in the morning — animals wandering right up close and far more movement than later in the day when it gets hotter. 🦒

You’ll also find that Kali River Rapids often opens a little later than the rest of the park, which is another reason why Pandora is the best place to spend those first precious hours.

😴 You’ll Think You’re Fine… Until You’re Not!

The excitement keeps everyone going at first, but jet lag has a habit of catching up with you when you least expect it.

On our first trip, we powered through the morning thinking we were absolutely fine… and then suddenly hit a wall around late morning. Both adults and kids went from “buzzing” to completely wiped out in about 20 minutes.

By that point, heading back to the hotel felt like the best decision we made all holiday.

A swim 🏊‍♀️, a couple of hours’ sleep or simply putting your feet up can make all the difference to the rest of your trip.

If you’re travelling with children, don’t be afraid to use a pushchair, even if they haven’t used one at home for years. Walt Disney World involves an incredible amount of walking, and tired little legs can quickly turn into grumpy ones. We saw so many families doing the same thing — it’s far more common than you’d think. 👶

🌴 Head Back Out Later

Once everyone’s had a rest, head back out in the late afternoon.

Try not to call it a night too early. Having your tea before heading back to the hotel can really help your family start adjusting to Orlando time, making the following days much easier. 🍽️

We found this evening “reset” helped us feel properly in sync by day two or three instead of struggling with jet lag the whole week.

⚠️ Keep Your First Evening Flexible

I’d avoid booking a table-service meal on your arrival day.

It sounds like a lovely way to start your holiday, but jet lag can hit harder than you expect. If you or the children end up sleeping longer than planned, there’s every chance you’ll miss your reservation. By the time you realise everyone is exhausted, your options for changing or cancelling it are likely to be very limited.

We learned this the hard way on a different trip, and since then we always keep that first evening completely flexible.

Here we have detailed how to use the Disney Experience app to book and cancel your dining reservations….. again it’s not always easy to change them!

🗺️ My Ideal First Morning Plan

  • Wake up early (thanks, jet lag!)

  • Catch one of the first Disney buses between 6:30am and 6:45am

  • Arrive for park opening

  • Enjoy an early breakfast at Tusker House, or grab one of the limited quick-service breakfast options

  • Make a beeline for Flight of Passage

  • Ride Na’vi River Journey

  • Head over to Expedition Everest

  • Ride Kilimanjaro Safaris once it opens

  • Return to your hotel before lunchtime for a well-earned rest

  • Head back out in the late afternoon for tea and a relaxed evening

Using your jet lag to your advantage on day one can save you hours of queueing, help your family settle into Orlando time more quickly, and set you up for an amazing Walt Disney World holiday. ✨
