🤔 Is Disney World in the Summer Holidays Really That Bad?
If you’re planning a Walt Disney World holiday from the UK, you’ve probably seen plenty of people online warning against visiting during the summer holidays.
“It’s unbearably hot.”
“The parks are packed.”
“You’ll spend the whole trip standing in queues.”
After visiting Walt Disney World at Easter, February half-term, June, September, Christmas and August, I can honestly say that summer isn’t nearly as bad as many people make it out to be.
Would I choose August over every other month? Probably not.
Would I avoid Disney World altogether if the summer holidays were my only option? Absolutely not.
In fact, some aspects of a summer Disney holiday are actually better than other times of the year.
As a UK family tied to school holidays, we’ve learned that the key to enjoying Disney in August isn’t avoiding the season—it’s understanding how to make it work for you.
So if you’re wondering whether Walt Disney World during the summer holidays is worth it, here’s our honest experience.
❌ The Biggest Myth About Disney World Summer Holidays
The biggest misconception is that summer is automatically the busiest time of year.
While August is undoubtedly busy, we’ve personally found Christmas and New Year to feel significantly more crowded.
Many US families have more flexibility around school dates than UK visitors and increasingly choose to avoid Florida during the hottest months.
That means summer crowds aren’t always as overwhelming as people expect.
You’ll still encounter queues, but don’t assume every attraction will have a three-hour wait.
Compared with quieter periods like September or February, August is busier. However, compared with Christmas, Easter and Spring Break, it can actually feel surprisingly manageable.

✈️ Flights Aren’t Always As Expensive As You Think
One of the biggest surprises for many UK families is that flights aren’t necessarily dramatically more expensive during the summer holidays.
Because airlines add additional services during peak travel periods, there is often much more availability than people realise.
We usually fly from Manchester with Virgin Atlantic and have often found that booking a Disney package with flights included can work out surprisingly good value.
Booking early is key, but don’t automatically assume August means sky-high flight prices.
Always compare package prices before booking separately.
🍽️ Dining Plan Deals Can Make Summer Great Value
Historically, many Disney Dining Plan promotions excluded much of the summer period.
Thankfully, recent UK offers have often included summer travel dates.
For families visiting for two weeks or longer, the savings can be substantial and help offset some of the additional costs associated with travelling during school holidays.
If you’re already planning to eat at Disney restaurants, this can make summer much better value than many people expect.

Having visited Walt Disney World at Christmas and during August, we’d happily choose summer crowds over Christmas crowds.
Yes, the parks are busy.
Yes, popular attractions will still have long waits.
But we’ve found August crowds to be far more manageable than the festive period.
Many first-time visitors are pleasantly surprised by how much they can still achieve with a little planning.
🌙 Longer Opening Hours Mean More Park Time
One of our favourite things about visiting during the summer holidays is the extended park hours.
Disney often keeps the parks open later during peak season, which creates much more flexibility.
Rather than trying to stay in the parks from rope drop until fireworks, we prefer to:
✅ Arrive early
✅ Enjoy attractions before the heat builds
✅ Return to the hotel in the afternoon
✅ Relax by the pool
✅ Let the children rest or nap
✅ Return for the evening
This strategy completely transforms a summer Disney holiday.
🏊 Pools, Water Parks and Resort Activities Are Amazing
One of the biggest advantages of summer is that you genuinely want to use your resort.
The pools are fantastic, splash areas are busy and Disney hotels often have plenty of entertainment throughout the day.
Some of our children’s favourite holiday memories have actually been made back at the resort rather than inside the parks.
When temperatures soar, spending a few hours in the pool isn’t a compromise—it’s often one of the best parts of the day.
📅 Late August Can Be A Hidden Gem
If your school dates allow it, travelling towards the end of August can be a smart move.
Many American schools return before UK schools, meaning domestic holiday demand often starts to fall slightly before British families head home.
You still enjoy the benefits of travelling during the summer holidays while potentially seeing slightly lower crowd levels.

🎒 Perfect For Longer Family Holidays
For many UK families, summer is the only realistic opportunity to enjoy a two or three-week Florida holiday.

Florida in August is incredibly hot and humid.
Having visited throughout the year, summer is easily the most physically demanding season.

😴 Kids Tire Much Faster
This is something we noticed immediately after having children.
Adults can often push through the heat.
Kids usually can’t.
By lunchtime, many children are ready for a break, which is why we always recommend building rest time into your plans.
Whether that’s pool time, quiet time in the room or an afternoon nap, you’ll enjoy your holiday much more if you work with the weather rather than against it.
⛈️ Afternoon Thunderstorms Are Common
Summer in Florida often follows a familiar pattern.
Beautiful mornings.
Clouds building throughout the afternoon.
Then a dramatic thunderstorm.
The good news is that storms are usually short-lived.
The bad news is they can temporarily disrupt outdoor attractions and pool time.
Pack ponchos—you’ll almost certainly use them.
🎢 It Is Still Busier Than Quieter Months
Although we don’t think summer crowds are as bad as Christmas, they are still higher than:

• February
• Early June
• Certain weeks in May

It’s hot, humid and busier than some other times of year.
But it’s also full of long park hours, fantastic pool days, family time and the opportunity to enjoy a longer holiday without taking children out of school.
If you go in with realistic expectations and plan around the weather, a Disney World summer holiday can be every bit as magical as a visit during cooler months.
And for many UK families, it remains one of the most practical times to experience the magic together.
