✨ Is Staying On-Site at Walt Disney World Worth It for UK Families?
If you’re planning a trip to Walt Disney World Resort from the UK, one of the biggest decisions you’ll make is where to stay.
Do you stay on-site at a Disney hotel, or save money by staying off-site?
Having visited multiple times—both with and without children, pre kids we would always include a stay on property. As we always visit Universal as well, we do a split stay, usually staying on Disney property, then heading to Universal and back to Disney (in a different hotel to try and check off as many as we can!) Now when travelling with kids it’s even more important and we 100% would always stay on site now.

What Does “Staying On-Site” Actually Mean?
Staying on-site means booking one of Disney’s own hotels, located within Walt Disney World itself.
These range from more budget-friendly options to higher-end resorts, but all come with one big advantage—you’re fully inside the Disney bubble from the moment you arrive. For us this is the real deal, you can truly switch off from real life and enjoy that bubble!
For the value category hotels, we have stayed at them all. Our favourite by a mile is Disney’s Art of Animation, which is perfectly themed for a family trip. At the delux end we love Disney’s Contemporary Resort with its walkable path to Magic Kingdom and fantastic dining options. We also really enjoy Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge and Wilderness Lodge, if you don’t mind being slightly further away from the magic of the parks, they are truly beautiful and more peaceful hotels.
For many UK families, especially on a once-in-a-lifetime trip, that’s a big part of the appeal.
👍🏻 The Pros of Staying On-Site
1. Everything Is Easy (Especially After a Long Flight)
After a long-haul flight from the UK, the last thing you want is complicated logistics.
When you stay on-site, everything is designed to be simple. Transport around Disney is included, so you don’t need to worry about driving, parking, or navigating unfamiliar roads.
When travelling with kids, especially younger ones, this makes a huge difference.
2. Early Park Access and extra evening hours (depending on your hotel)
One of the biggest perks is early park entry, usually 30 minutes, which gives you access to the parks before general guests.
This might not sound like a big deal, but it really is—especially with children. You can get on popular rides with shorter queues and make the most of your mornings before it gets too busy.

For the extra evening hours, these are reserved for deluxe hotel guests, and you get an extra two hours after the park closes at select parks on select nights. At the minute this is twice a week at Magic Kingdom and Epcot, on a Monday and a Wednesday but is subject to change.
3. The Full Disney Experience
There’s something about staying on-site that just feels different!
From themed hotels to character dining and being surrounded by Disney 24/7, it adds an extra layer to the trip—especially for children.
If this is a big, special holiday (which it often is for UK families), that added magic can be worth it.

4. No Need for a Car
If you stay on-site, you can easily get around using Disney transport—buses, boats, and the Skyliner.
That means no car hire, no parking fees, and no stress driving in a different country.
For many UK travellers, that alone is a huge advantage.
👎🏻 The Cons of Staying On-Site
1. It’s More Expensive
There’s no getting around it—staying on-site is usually more expensive than staying off-site. There are so many options when staying in Orlando off site for all budgets.
If you’re travelling from the UK and already paying for flights, this can make a noticeable difference to your overall budget.
2. Less Space Than Off-Site Villas
Off-site accommodation (like villas) often gives you more space, separate bedrooms, and your own pool. We did this many years ago as a big group, we totally missed the Disney bubble, but it was pretty cool having our own pool.
When travelling as a larger family, or with young children who need naps and quiet time, this can be a big advantage.
3. You’re in the “Disney Bubble”
While this is a pro for many people, it can also be a downside.
If you like having more variety—restaurants, shops, or exploring outside Disney—you might feel a bit limited staying on-site.
What About Staying Off-Site?
Staying off-site is often cheaper and gives you more flexibility, especially if you’re hiring a car.
You may get:
More space
Better value for money
More dining options
But you’ll lose the convenience and perks that come with staying inside Walt Disney World Resort.
✨ My Honest Experience
From my experience, staying on-site becomes more valuable when travelling as a family. You have to weight up the ease of it verses the cost. If you are booking a Disney package then the decision is already made for you…… enjoy your bubble 😊
Not having to think about transport, being close to the parks, and having everything organised in one place made the trip feel much more enjoyable.
